People in Zagreb always give themselves time to linger and socialise over drinks. Whatever the time of year, new locales are always raising and lowering their banners across the city centre and beyond, while traditional landmarks stay firm. Visitors can find examples along Ilica; down Savska near the Student Centre; and especially in a hub around lounge-bar central, Preradovićev trg, by the flower market. The best bar crawl remains Tkalčićeva, the atmospheric, car-free thoroughfare by the market.

Coffee is enjoyed on downtown terrace cafés (the post-shopping Saturday-morning drink is known as špica) or at smaller, contemporary spots such as Eli’s Caffè. Mention must be made of music bars such as Maraschino, Spunk, Kolaž and Vintage Industrial Bar; the kind of bars that develop a clubby feel as the night goes on, and Bikers Beer Factory, a friendly place to grab a beer for some rock ‘n’ roll.
